Tommy Hilfiger - A modular wall system

From Heavy to Light – A New Retail Experience

In 2015, Tommy Hilfiger approached us with a unique challenge: to develop a completely new wall system that did not yet exist. They wanted to move away from the heavy, dark furniture concept that was characteristic of their stores at the time and instead create a lighter, more transparent design with subtle Japanese influences.

But it was about more than just design. They were looking for a partner who could contribute ideas from the outset on technical feasibility, smart material choices, and scalability. Someone with experience in value engineering, who could switch gears quickly in the design phase, and who had the network to enable an international rollout.

Our approach

Inspired by the Japanese game Mikado, our engineers and designers set to work on a refined and airy concept: a modular system with no visible connections, radiating simplicity and elegance. Using 3D printing, we developed immediately workable prototypes, allowing ideas to be translated into tangible and testable components at lightning speed.

These prototypes helped us, together with the Tommy Hilfiger team, to refine choices, optimize connections, and make assembly as easy as possible. And all without tools. The first store to test the system was in Berlin. The positive reactions quickly led to a further rollout to four other pilot locations.

Based on the insights gained, we scaled up the system to production. The first series was produced through our office in Turkey. The official launch took place in Ostend, definitively securing the new concept's place in Tommy Hilfiger's store image.

The result!

The result is an innovative, aesthetic, and lightweight wall system that fully matches Tommy Hilfiger's brand identity. The combination of smart engineering and rapid prototyping kept costs, quality, and delivery times under control and ensured that the system was not only beautiful but also practical and scalable.

A project in which technical knowledge and aesthetics reinforce each other. A great start to a long-term collaboration.
